Collaboration – what is it?

by kberman on June 26, 2009

The Spheres team defines collaboration in a few ways. The product has been built in service of some big concepts.

A) Collaboration is just talking. At the root of it we’re talking about communication.  This has been done since the beginning of time….

…with technology we just get to make it more fun.  People  talking to people about what’s important to them,  listening to others and responding.   Simple stuff here.

B) Collaboration is open. If you only worked in a silo you’d either be terribly inefficient or really busy.  That doesn’t mean everyone needs to be involved…but we think it’s important to include the right people. These may be people who have a vested stake in project or people who need to contribute their opinion or knowledge. Or maybe these are people who justneed to be informed of what is going on. Whoever they are, collaboration works because  it’s you + others working towards a shared goal.

C) Collaboration is a process. Collaboration isn’t for the sake of collaboration. No sir.  There is a goal that people are working towards. Whether it be to produce a sales document, an overall project mission, create a legal document or just plan what you’ll have for dinner. Collaboration is a productive tool that improves or enhances a desired outcome.  Emphasis on outcome.
